The custom furniture experience

It’s not like going to the store, no matter how fancy. Commissioning a piece of custom furniture is a unique experience; it will require your ideas and inspiration, there will be more decisions than just color or upholstery. Custom furniture is a collaboration between client and craftsman requiring give-and-take and a free exchange of ideas.

A great piece of furniture is found at the convergence of beautiful raw materials, exceptional craftsmanship and thoughtful design.
— Kelly Wooldridge, SGO Works

Here is a typical outline of how the process of a bespoke furniture commission flows:

  • Inspiration: We start with what you need: a table, a chair, built-ins, the list goes on-and-on. With your ideas in hand, whether it’s something you saw on the internet, in a magazine, on “Mad Men” or in a friend’s home, I’ll put pencil to paper and sketch out the basics of an idea and how it can come to life.

  • Initial Review: I’ll send you my sketches for review, along with the price for your piece(s). It’s important at this point to be blunt: custom furniture doesn’t come cheap. Fine hardwoods are expensive (though at decidedly cheap compared to even five years ago), labor is intensive and fine finishes take time to apply. I will always be upfront with you about why things cost what they cost. Unless you have a species of wood already in mind I will generally give you the prices for a range of choices.

  • Craftsman’s Agreement: Once we’ve agreed on the price, the basics of your design, choice of material and finishes, my agreement will be sent to you for endorsement. The agreement outlines my pledge to you as a craftsman and your responsibilities as the client.

  • Deposit: Along with the signed Craftsman’s Agreement, you’ll send your deposit, which is 50% of the total price. The balance of your total will be paid upon delivery of your finished piece(s).

  • Fabrication: Now is the fun part for me and the longest part for you. I’ll take the drawings are bring them to life. I will keep you updated along the way with pictures and text messages to show you all of the exciting developments, from beautiful pieces of wood to joinery details to almost-finished products.

  • Delivery: Regardless of whether you’re taking possession of a figured cherry dining room table or black walnut built-ins, my job isn’t done until your furniture is in its final home. My prices always include delivery and installation (where appropriate) and my proposals always let you know what is what.
